Are you looking for a small dog that won’t leave fur all over your house? You’re not the only one. How much a dog sheds is actually one of the biggest factors that people consider when deciding to buy a dog. Many people don’t want their home overrun with hair and don’t like the idea of their pup adding more chores to their already busy lives such as consistent brushing or sweeping dog fur. Others need a dog that doesn’t shed because of their allergies and wouldn’t be able to have a dog with excess fur.
We want to help our readers learn about various dog breeds either to educate people interested in dogs or for potential buyers that are considering getting a new pup to enrich their lives. So in another post with that ultimate goal in mind, we have compiled a list of small dogs that don’t shed.

Basenjis are said to be catlike in nature as they groom themselves well and keep their coats clean. Because of this they are low maintenance in the grooming department and cause very little shedding issues for their owners. The Basenji is a great option for someone looking for non shedding dogs. Plus they are one of only a few breeds that don’t bark so this may also be appealing to some potential owners.

Maltese

If maintained properly their coats should have a nice shiny glow making this breed even more attractive.
Miniature Schnauzer

Big, bushy beards and eyebrows give this breed a memorable and signature look. Their coats can come in colors of salt and pepper, black and silver, or just plain solid black. Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier, or Yorkie as it’s more commonly known, is a small toy dog originating from Britain. They are the smallest breed in the terrier family and one of the smallest breeds in the world, sometimes weighing only up to a measly seven pounds. This breed became popular in cities for it’s compact bodies but feisty attitude. Yorkies have a gorgeous silky coat that reaches all the way down to the floor. Scottish Terrier
This self assured breed makes for a loveable yet low maintenance house pet. Their signature beards and puffy eyebrows make them appear wise beyond their years. Scotties make for good watchdogs and are alert and dignified. A thin, wiry overcoat lays atop a denser undercoat that comes in colors of black, wheat, or striped. Though they shed minimally, care is still needed to keep their coats well maintained and glossy.
Toy Poodle
Toy poodles boast a great history of domestication for centuries. They have provided their families with a clever but passionate and lovable demeanor for generations. Poodles coats are generally very dense, coarse, and in many cases curly. Potential buyers of poodles can rest at ease knowing that these dogs don’t shed much, but their coats still need to be groomed often in order to keep them looking shiny and healthy.
Bolognese
The Bolognese is a small dog originating in Italy, named after the northern Italian city of Bologna. This breed is among the toy dog group, and is considered more of an indoors family companion. This is due to it’s serene and seemingly calm temperament. They can be playful and loving pets, but are mostly inactive and docile. Their white coats are long and fluffy, especially across the head and tail.
Chinese Crested
The Chinese Crested breed is a hairless dog breed. Like other hairless breeds, they come in two types, without hair and with hair. The hairless type has smooth skin along its body and has tufts of hair on the head, tail, and ankles. The coated type, or powderpuff, is covered with a soft and silky light coat. This breed can range from light powder skin to a darker exposed skin, and a whole range of colors are possible on the head and tail. Because of the hairless(or mostly hairless) bodies the Chinese Crested make for a great option for someone looking for a non shedding or hypoallergenic dog. This breed is fairly rare however, and if looking to purchase one buyers should be aware that they will be hard to find and if found will likely have a hefty price tag attached to them.
Havanese
This vivacious breed can make for great companions and loyal pets. This breed has a short curly tail and a beautifully silky outer coat. The coat can be corded, or it can be clipped depending on the owners preference. Clipping the coat short can reduce the grooming time which may be more beneficial to certain owners. Their glossy coats can come in a wide range of colors, spanning from lighter colors such as white and gold to darker colors like red and black. Just like the majority of the dog breeds on this list, their coats generally don’t shed much, but for the longer coat variety they will still require some grooming and care in order to keep their fur healthy and shiny.
No matter the reason you may be looking for small dogs that don’t shed, we hope this post has shed some light on the matter.
